Awareness in September: Balancing Multiple Causes
Written on
Chapter 1: The Overflow of Causes
In the realm of social awareness, the number of causes often surpasses the months available in the calendar. This imbalance suggests that if we aim to spotlight every illness or societal issue, some months will demand heightened attention and empathy for the multitude of tragedies affecting humanity. Unfortunately, this leads to certain causes being overlooked amidst the chaos.
Today, September stands out as a particularly crowded month for awareness campaigns. Notably, the creators of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month have done an admirable job. Their efforts have brought to light that individuals seeking help can now reach out via call or text to 988, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, similar to how one would contact 911 for emergencies. The previous hotline, 1–800–273-TALK (8255), will continue to operate, which is reassuring for those who may prefer texting over speaking on the phone.
In an email from my insurance provider, I was reminded that September is also recognized as Life Insurance Awareness Month. The coincidence is striking: both Suicide Prevention and Life Insurance Awareness share the same timeframe. It's important to understand that choosing to end one’s life can impact the family's ability to receive insurance benefits, making it essential to remain cognizant of both subjects concurrently.
Additionally, I was reminded that September is National Preparedness Month, adding another layer of complexity to my reflections this month.
But the list doesn't stop there. A brief Google search reveals that September is also designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Pain Awareness Month, Deaf Awareness Month, Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, National Yoga Awareness Month, Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Sickle Cell Awareness Month, Sepsis Awareness Month, Attendance Awareness Month, Self-Care Awareness Month, and Campus Safety Awareness Month. All of these causes compete for our attention in just one month.
With such a plethora of issues demanding our focus, how does one choose a single cause to support? What occurs when numerous topics pull at our emotions simultaneously? While some awareness can enlighten, an overload can lead to feelings of despair.
Ultimately, the best approach is to select your audience and the timing of your messages carefully. Sadly, this mirrors the situation on busy highways: when overwhelmed by too many signs, drivers may stop noticing them altogether.
Chapter 2: Awareness Amidst Overload
As we dive deeper into September's awareness initiatives, it’s crucial to shed light on Deaf Awareness Month. Understanding the significance of this month can inspire empathy and action.
The video titled "September is Deaf Awareness Month - YouTube" highlights the importance of recognizing and supporting the deaf community. It emphasizes the need for awareness and understanding to foster inclusivity and equality.
