Finding the right words can often feel like an art form, particularly when we are burdened by unresolved issues such as resentment and past pain. Many people may not even realize they are carrying this emotional baggage. When we encounter others, particularly those who seem to know exactly how to provoke us, it can lead to outbursts—whether expressed physically or verbally, the outcomes are usually harmful.

In my early years, I struggled with this dynamic. Unhealed wounds often led to disastrous consequences in my relationships. Once triggered, I lost control, causing pain to both myself and those around me. It was clear I needed to make a change.

To prevent further damage, I resolved to refrain from engaging in verbal conflicts until I was confident my words accurately reflected my feelings. When faced with a situation where I felt reactive, I would say, “I don’t trust myself to respond appropriately right now. Can we revisit this after I’ve had some time to reflect?”

If it was someone close to me, I would add, “This is about me, not you,” and I would provide a timeframe for when I would follow up. This approach allowed me to process my emotions and articulate my thoughts more clearly.

Over time, I developed greater self-trust and began to release the emotional baggage I had been holding onto. I became less fearful of conflict and was able to cultivate healthier friendships while gaining better control over my emotions.

Self-mastery is multifaceted—it encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. It stems from a genuine desire to become your best self and interact with the world intentionally. Everyone has the potential for self-mastery, and it simply requires a commitment to understanding oneself and taking meaningful actions.
