Embracing Digital Skills: A Community Tech Tea Party Experience
Written on
Chapter 1: Community Engagement Through Technology
Recently, I hosted my inaugural Techy Tea Party at the village hall, a relaxed gathering filled with music, tea, biscuits, and opportunities to learn essential digital skills. The event sparked meaningful conversations, and I had the honor of meeting Bob, affectionately known as Bob the Badger. This retired gentleman discovered how to download bus schedules, modify his phoneβs accessibility settings, and effectively utilize Google for information searches. ππ²π
I encouraged attendees to bring along a list of topics they needed assistance with or were eager to explore. It was inspiring to see participants come prepared.
Hereβs the comprehensive list of subjects we tackled during our individual coaching sessions:
π£οΈ Adjusting accessibility settings, including text enlargement and speech-to-text features
βοΈ Utilizing a weather application
π Navigating Facebook effectively
π· Uploading images to social media
π Exploring WhatsApp functionalities
π₯ Enjoying content creation on TikTok
π¬ Differentiating between various social media platforms
π Securing personal data on mobile devices
π Finding bus and train schedules
π Mastering Google search techniques
πΆ Monitoring data usage on mobile plans
ποΈ Organizing events with Google Calendar
π Discussing home internet service options
Why did I organize these sessions?
First and foremost, it was gratifying to contribute to the community. In the UK, millions lack essential digital skills necessary to operate devices, access online services, and navigate the internet. With so many aspects of life now online, digital literacy has become a fundamental skill. Without the ability to connect online, individuals risk exclusion and disadvantage.
Going digital can lead to cost savings, provide access to healthcare, shopping, and much more. It also enables connections with loved ones and the retrieval of important daily information. Many participants expressed their fears surrounding technology, stating they didn't want to trouble family members for help. To them, using a laptop felt like learning a new language.
Moreover, these sessions serve the dual purpose of fostering community bonds and combating loneliness. I aspire to continue hosting these gatherings on a monthly basis.
