Life can often feel overwhelming and chaotic, but that doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. In fact, if you find yourself feeling a bit out of control, you may be on the right path.
As humans, we crave control. We establish routines to secure income, plan vacations for rejuvenation, and hope that life progresses smoothly, free from calamities. While cultivating good habits can create a comforting environment, believing that you can manage every aspect of your life can leave you vulnerable to unforeseen challenges.
Here’s how to navigate life’s unpredictability to enhance your happiness and adapt to sudden changes.
Life is inherently uncertain. Growing up in a tumultuous environment made me long for stability. Tired of frequent relocations, I sought to control my surroundings, believing that financial success would bring the security I craved. While money can provide a stable foundation, it cannot guarantee stability in life itself.
At its essence, life is unpredictable. Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli, in "Seven Brief Lessons on Physics," discusses how even the most fundamental aspects of existence—gravity, temperature, time—are governed by probabilities rather than certainties.

This illustrates that no matter how sophisticated our understanding or technology, we cannot predict outcomes with absolute certainty. Life is filled with uncertainties that make it both unpredictable and worth living.

In the early 1990s, mathematician Edward Lorenz introduced the concept of Chaos Theory, which is often illustrated by the Butterfly Effect. He stated,
“When the present influences the future, but the approximate present does not reliably determine the future.”
In simpler terms, this means that even the tiniest change in a situation can lead to vastly different outcomes. In the complex experiment of daily life, even minor actions can dramatically alter the trajectory of events.
The well-known example from Neil Gaimain's "Good Omens" describes how a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon could result in a storm in Europe. With countless variables at play, predicting what will happen next is virtually impossible, making it liberating rather than paralyzing. Accepting this chaos has significantly improved my happiness.

Faith, while a small word, can lead to significant changes. It embodies hope and represents a relinquishment of control. My upbringing wasn’t religious, so I’ve formed a personal understanding of faith throughout my life. One of the most impactful practices I've adopted is the belief that I cannot control everything.
No matter how much effort you put in, the element of chaos is always present. You could make all the right moves in business and still face failure. Conversely, you might make mistakes and unexpectedly thrive.
In 2022, I took a leap and left my job to pursue self-employment once more. After a previous setback, I was determined to succeed. I tried to meticulously manage every aspect of my life—sleep, work habits, health—yet results were slow to manifest, leading to anxiety.
It was then I realized a profound truth: you can only do your best. There’s no such thing as giving 110%. While you can improve your productivity over time, there are limits to what can be accomplished in a day.
So, one day, while reflecting in my living room, I chose to surrender control—not to a deity or system but to the understanding that life unfolds as it will. Even with a perfect plan, life rarely turns out as expected.

The belief that we have more control than we truly do often leads to regret over our choices. For instance, if you win $10 at a slot machine, you might wonder what could have been had you won $100. However, if you could visualize every possible outcome, you'd see that alternate realities exist where you win nothing or even lose money.
While some outcomes are more probable than others, they all have equal existence in the realm of possibilities. Regretting past actions is akin to longing for an alternate reality that never occurred.
Actions yield reactions, but nothing is certain. Life, with its unpredictability and chaos, would be dull if it were merely easy and pleasurable.
Final Reflections: Shaping Rather Than Controlling
It’s human nature to desire what we lack. Security is a fundamental need, leading us to strive for an ideal existence. We often feel disillusioned when faced with the countless alternate realities life presents.
Instead of trying to outline a perfect path, focus on shaping your journey. Embrace the unpredictability, stack the odds in your favor, and leave the rest to fate. You cannot regret what never happened, nor can you control the ever-evolving nature of life.
