Embracing Retirement: Do We Really Need a Lifestyle Consultant?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Retirement Dilemma

As I ponder my journey into retirement, I find myself daydreaming more about it than any other topic. The thought of launching new ventures post-retirement frequently crosses my mind. Recently, the notion of becoming a Retirement Lifestyle Consultant struck me as an intriguing idea.

However, a quick online search revealed that the concept of retirement lifestyle consultation is already established. It's clear that retirees often seek guidance on financial matters, housing, healthcare, and estate planning from professionals like financial advisors, realtors, doctors, and attorneys. Yet, I question why someone with years of life experience would need a consultant to dictate how to think, feel, or behave in their new chapter.

Retirement frees us from the constraints of the professional world. We can relish sleeping in, forgoing formal attire, skipping shaving, staying up late, or enjoying a cocktail in the afternoon. Is there truly a need for someone to guide us through this newfound freedom?

Professional Insights

According to various Retirement Lifestyle Consultants, there is a significant demand for assistance:

  • Next Chapter Lifestyle Advisors emphasize the importance of managing time effectively in retirement through a structured lifestyle plan. They warn that many retirees end up simply filling their days without engaging in activities that hold personal significance, leading to feelings of aimlessness.
    1. Jons Consulting LLC notes that retirees often realize their actual lifestyle differs from their expectations, prompting a search for a deeper sense of purpose.

These insights highlight a genuine need for support, with consultation fees starting at over $100 per hour, depending on the package.

Introducing Pimp My Retirement

With this in mind, I am thrilled to introduce my own venture, Pimp My Retirement. My goal is to craft a personalized retirement experience for you. Together, we will explore:

  • The best times to visit shops and dining establishments.
  • The ideal number of garden gnomes for your yard.
  • The perfect vantage points for sunrise and sunset views.
  • The ultimate retirement hat selection.
  • Whether we can indulge in cocktails before 5 PM.
  • How to balance aspirations of becoming a great writer or watercolorist.
  • The ongoing mystery of the cat’s whereabouts.
  • When breakfast transitions to brunch (hint: add a mimosa).
  • How to tackle gardening or DIY projects.
  • The source of dirt in a solo living space.
  • The validity of contemplating a second nap as a sign of purpose.

While I don't intend to diminish the hard work of professional retirement consultants or the value they bring to clients, it's essential to recognize that everyone aims to make the most of their retirement journey.

The Evolution of Retirement

Historically, retirement was a brief phase, often dictated by necessity rather than choice, with mortality looming close. As life expectancy has increased, the concept of retirement has evolved to facilitate a smoother transition for older, higher-paid workers, creating space for younger talent. Moreover, keeping young individuals occupied has become crucial to prevent dissent.

Striving for Improvement

Retirees, with their rich life experiences, understand the fleeting nature of time and the preciousness of life. Everyone yearns to maximize their potential. The challenge lies in figuring out how to enhance what we have.

We are fortunate to live in an era filled with resources aimed at helping us live our best lives. Publications, videos, blogs, and insightful writers abound, offering valuable support for retirees. Yet, is self-improvement genuinely attainable? Let's explore this through the lens of Alan Watts.

Alan Watts, who introduced Eastern philosophies to the Western world during the counterculture movement, questioned our incessant pursuit of self-improvement. He proposed that if one feels the need for improvement, the very entity seeking change is flawed, creating a self-perpetuating cycle.

Watts observed that we often look outside ourselves for help—through religion, literature, or lifestyle consultants. To paraphrase him, we crave something meaningful, akin to a child yearning for a candy bar, but in an abstract form that we deem spiritually enriching.

As imperfect beings, how do we address our imperfections? Is our desire to transform into something we are not part of the dilemma?

In Eastern philosophy, the path to enlightenment involves relinquishing desire. Watts highlights another paradox: “If I desire not to desire, is that not already desire? How can I desire not to desire?”

No Need for Gurus or Consultants

Retirees, perhaps it's time to let go. Embrace the concept of Wu Wei, or effortless action. Take a moment to breathe and allow your thoughts about plans and possibilities to pass by without attachment. See where life leads you.
