# Embracing Self-Love: A Vital Journey for Women Today

Chapter 1: The Controversy Surrounding Self-Love
It often puzzles me to see women, particularly those within the Christian community, criticize others for taking time to prioritize their own needs and indulge in self-care. Some even label the pursuit of self-love as "selfish," which is truly disheartening. This mindset needs to change.
We must recognize that if we neglect our own well-being, we cannot expect anyone else to take care of us. No matter how many supportive people surround us, failing to refill our own cup will lead to exhaustion. This cycle not only affects us but also influences our children, who might adopt the same unhealthy patterns. It’s essential to understand that God is not honored by self-sacrifice that drains us. Prioritizing the needs of others at the expense of our own is simply not sustainable.
To gauge my community’s perspective, I conducted a quick poll on Instagram, and every single response supported the notion of self-love. But what does self-love truly entail?
Understanding Self-Love
Self-care and self-love are fundamental to our overall well-being—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. But what exactly does “self-love” mean?
The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "regard for one’s own well-being or happiness, viewed as a natural and fitting attitude towards oneself." Furthermore, the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation describes self-love as an appreciation for oneself that stems from actions supporting our growth across various dimensions.
From my perspective, self-care and self-love are simply about tending to our own needs. They involve taking the time to reflect on our desires and requirements. I make my health and happiness a priority.
Many of us often overlook the importance of introspection. We rarely take the time to meditate or journal about crucial questions such as: 1. What do I truly want? 2. What are my deepest desires? 3. Who am I at my core? 4. What direction do I wish to take in life? 5. Am I living as my highest self? 6. If not, what changes are necessary? 7. What actions can I take today to nurture myself?
The Importance of Loving Ourselves
The scripture emphasizes that the first commandment is to love God wholeheartedly, while the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). It’s astonishing how often we overlook the phrase “as yourself.”
Investing time in self-nurturing is essential for leading a life filled with joy, abundance, and fulfillment. If you follow me on Instagram, you know these three elements are non-negotiable for my well-being.
Our lives encompass physical, mental, and spiritual facets that all require our attention. When we become preoccupied with the demands of others, we frequently neglect our own needs. Much like an acorn that requires the right conditions to grow into a mighty oak, we too need proper care and nurturing.
Nurturing Our Body, Mind, and Spirit
We must feed our bodies with nutritious foods, ensure we rest adequately, engage in physical activity, and spend time in nature. Caring for our physical health enhances our appearance, boosts our spirits, and optimizes our well-being.
The mind, too, is a powerful asset. We should dedicate time to stimulate it through reading, learning, and exploring new concepts. Activities like meditation, journaling, and self-reflection help maintain mindfulness and awareness of our thoughts and emotions.
Our spirit also craves nourishment. Building a connection with our Creator through prayer, meditation, and intentional faith practices provides direction and purpose. Spending time in His presence is crucial for spiritual growth.
How to Care for Yourself
Self-care looks different for everyone, but it is essential to engage in activities that nourish your spirit, mind, and body. Perhaps you enjoy a relaxing bubble bath with candles and soft music, or maybe you prefer a cozy afternoon nap.
A simple 30-minute stroll in your neighborhood can be rejuvenating—listen to the birds, feel the breeze, and enjoy the scenery. For some, a spa day or a visit to a favorite restaurant for lunch is the perfect way to connect with oneself.
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast like me, consider a hike or planting colorful flowers in your garden. Embrace the earth beneath your feet and enjoy grounding yourself. Engaging in creative pursuits, such as painting or sketching, can also be a wonderful way to express love for yourself.
An excellent practice is the "Morning Pages" from Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way, which can spark creativity and clarity for the day ahead.
