Embracing the Unknown: 9 Insights from Quitting Your Job to Travel
Written on
Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery
Living on the road often prompts deep reflection. During my time in hostels, I frequently converse with fellow travelers and wonder, "What have I truly learned from this experience?" It feels as though I've transformed in many ways, but sometimes I question whether it's genuine growth or merely a product of my own ego. Writing serves as a powerful tool for introspection, yet I still grapple with unanswered questions.
Having embraced a nomadic lifestyle for five years, I've compiled nine realizations that caught me off guard. Had someone shared these insights with me beforehand, I would have dismissed them as impossible. It's akin to the idea that once you uncover a truth, there's no going back. Long-term travel has fundamentally changed me.
Cape Town, South Africa: The Shift in Health and Fitness
I used to be a staunch advocate for health, diligently attending yoga, Pilates, and other fitness classes while trying out every diet under the sun. Now, I find that my former obsession with strict routines has faded. I’ve come to prioritize my overall wellness, focusing on how I feel rather than how I look. This marks a significant shift from the person I once was.
Botswana: Nostalgia for Routine Work Days
At times, I find myself yearning for the simplicity of a regular work schedule. The certainty of a monthly paycheck feels comforting, especially during moments of self-doubt in my creative endeavors. Despite this, I wouldn’t trade my current lifestyle for anything. It's a reminder that while I appreciate the ease of my past, I thrive on the challenges of my present.
African Elephants in Botswana: The Concept of Time
Time has taken on a new meaning for me. Just this morning, I had to check my calendar to confirm it was Saturday. It’s amusing to think back to my days as a nurse, where I would ask patients about the day of the week, all while losing track of it myself. In this nomadic life, the day of the week seems less significant; all I need to know is when I check into a hostel or board a flight.
Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Cambodia: The Disappearance of Routine
Routines have largely vanished from my life. Unless you pause long enough to establish one, it becomes challenging to maintain a daily schedule while traveling. Most travelers who do have a routine likely stay in one place for an extended period. For me, my writing and long walks have emerged as my anchors, occurring whenever inspiration strikes.
Georgetown, Malaysia: The Emotional Rollercoaster of Travel
Crying has become an unexpected part of my journey. Whether it's tears of joy or moments of frustration, I’ve found myself shedding tears in various places—often overwhelmed by the freedom that travel brings. Navigating immigration challenges can be particularly stressful, leading to emotional outbursts.
The Day You Take the Leap
The day I resigned from my job was both exhilarating and terrifying. It felt liberating, yet I found myself questioning my choices once I landed in a foreign country. It’s normal to feel a mix of fear and excitement. However, the camaraderie among fellow travelers provides reassurance.
The Comfort of Familiarity
Being in a foreign country where the language barrier exists can make you long for familiarity. Encountering someone from your homeland can create an instant bond, offering a sense of comfort that transcends cultural differences.
The Path Back Home
One of the greatest truths I’ve discovered is that my previous life is always there, waiting for me. While I may have changed, the familiarity of that life remains, albeit with a new perspective.
Netflix and Chill: Embracing Downtime
There are days when I simply want to relax and not explore. It's crucial to allow myself moments of rest without guilt, reminiscent of the downtime I enjoyed at home. Acknowledging the need for balance is a journey in itself.
Ultimately, the experience of quitting your job to travel—whether for a month or longer—brings about change. It opens your eyes to new perspectives and instills a deeper appreciation for life. Many are held back by fear and the 'what-ifs,' but the truth is, your old life will still be there waiting for you.
Fear should not dictate your choices. Embracing the unknown and stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to unimaginable rewards. I passionately advocate for taking a career break; it can redefine your appreciation for life or propel you toward unforeseen opportunities.
If you find yourself hesitant about leaving your comfort zone, remember that creating a new routine in your travels is entirely possible. Embracing the ups and downs of this journey has taught me invaluable lessons, and I have no regrets about my decision to leave my job—if anything, I wish I had done it sooner.
So, what’s stopping you from pursuing your dreams? Let go of fear and embark on the adventure that awaits you.
XOXO,
S
