Embracing True Self-Care Beyond Surface Routines

Chapter 1: The Misconception of Self-Care
Reflecting on the concept of self-care, I found myself pondering its widespread usage while returning to New York from India a few months back. This term, "self-care," has infiltrated the wellness and mindfulness sectors, often employed by writers, influencers, bloggers, and marketers alike, in various posts and routines.
Often, it's linked to selling creams, massages, vacations, and experiences. But what does self-care truly signify over time, amidst the various phases of our lives?
As I soared across continents and countries, I began to jot down my thoughts on my iPhone, later refining them. These reflections highlight what self-care has represented for me throughout significant life transitions—from surviving cancer to becoming a journalist, a spouse, a parent, an author, and ultimately, like all of us, an ever-evolving individual navigating this beautiful world.
Here’s a poetic perspective on self-care:
Self-care transcends creams or skincare routines, It’s not just scheduled massages or solitary moments. These are merely tools—yes— But they serve as aids in deciphering the intricate puzzle Of your constantly shifting self.
True self-care embodies the ability to adapt To both yourself and those around you. It evolves with your understanding of your history, biology, psychology, chemistry, geology, And ancestry. It involves recognizing habits and patterns that hinder you, And those that propel you forward.
It demands a profound observation, Not only of yourself but of others as well, Understanding how we all act as mirrors, Reflecting, imitating, judging, and learning together.
Sustained self-care embraces curiosity, wonder, and play, Yet also requires determination, self-discipline, and restraint. It involves questioning yourself and observing how your responses evolve.
It’s about discerning when to release And when to hold firm, When to engage in multiple activities And when to concentrate on a singular focus.
Self-care is a lifelong study of change And constancy, It embodies love and respect, Yet also passion and intensity. It involves extending care to others While recognizing the need to retreat And create space for your own needs.
It's a dynamic dance coupled with a sacred responsibility, An understanding of your surroundings, Recognizing where you belong And where you must challenge the status quo.
It represents an art, a craft, and a science, It should both empower and challenge you. True self-care cannot exist Without genuine care for the collective...
