Empowering Yourself: How to Rebuild Self-Belief

Chapter 1: The Importance of Integrity
It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but despite my goal of posting at least once a week, I've fallen behind, with this being my first entry in a month. While I could come up with justifications—excuse might be a better word—for my absence, I won't. Making excuses only hinders progress.
A crucial connection exists between keeping promises and self-trust. In today's world, one of the most damaging factors in relationships is a lack of integrity: when words fail to align with actions. Think of the unfaithful partner, the unreliable friend, or the colleague who doesn't pull their weight. Such behaviors reveal the limited worth of mere words. To determine trustworthiness, observe people's actions rather than their promises.
When someone fails to uphold their word, they erode our trust and we start doubting them. The same can be said for our self-perception. When I neglected my first blog post three weeks ago, I told myself it was insignificant—a mere missed entry. However, that one lapse made it easier to skip the next post and then another. What began as one missed commitment quickly spiraled into three.
With each commitment I failed to meet, taking further action became increasingly challenging. I began to reshape my narrative about who I am. Throughout this year, I considered myself a writer because I wrote weekly—at least, I used to. After that initial missed post, I fell into a rut. I kept saying I would return to writing, yet a persistent inner voice whispered negativity.
"You're not cut out for this."
"You've run out of ideas."
"You're not a good writer, and certainly not an expert."
"Who would listen to you?"
This inner dialogue swiftly shifted my mindset from “I missed a week” to “Maybe writing isn't for me.” In his book, The War of Art, Stephen Pressfield describes this nagging voice as Resistance, whose purpose is to keep us stagnant and halt our growth. When we neglect our commitments, we amplify Resistance, which can stifle our aspirations and bury them beneath a pile of regrets and negativity.

However, it's equally important to repair your relationship with yourself. While it might sound cliché, having an honest conversation with yourself can significantly impact your commitment to change.

Whether you're starting a new habit or recommitting to an old one, it's crucial to set yourself up for success. Avoid overpromising; instead, make small, achievable commitments and build on those. My writing hiatus caused me to lose momentum. Now, as I resume writing, I’ve committed to 20 minutes of writing five days a week. Once I reestablish my writing routine, I’ll incorporate other blogging tasks.
Section 2.3: Follow Through on Your Commitments
With your plan in place, the next step is both simple and challenging: just do it! Show up daily and honor your commitments to yourself.

Accomplishing goals takes time, and we often overlook the importance of celebrating incremental progress. Why do we only think to celebrate after reaching the finish line? To maintain motivation and discipline, celebrate every small step, not just the major milestones.
I find myself questioning the quality of this post, feeling that it’s not my best work. It would be easy to delete it and give in to Resistance. However, the important thing is that I showed up and wrote today. Yes, I could improve, but I'm proud of myself for keeping my word. Showing up doesn't require perfection; it requires consistency.
Celebrate each step toward your goal, no matter how minor, and take pride in honoring your commitments. This approach will help rebuild your confidence and foster belief in yourself.
