Solar gardens, sometimes known as solar farms, function similarly to traditional power plants. They concentrate solar panels in a specific location, generating electricity that is then distributed through the grid. Subscribers to this energy substitute their reliance on coal-based electricity, which often leads to savings of around ten percent and a reduction in carbon emissions.
This model mirrors that of coal or nuclear facilities, where energy is produced at a single site and sent to consumers elsewhere. It demands significant capital investment and entails substantial electricity loss during distribution. The system includes interstate power lines, switching stations, and local lines, with users often unaware of the energy's origins. This separation of production and consumption is a hallmark of capitalism.
A key advantage of solar gardens is that they can be integrated into existing utility company models, lowering entry barriers. From a climate perspective, expanding solar gardens is crucial. However, if they dominate too much, we might miss a transformative opportunity.

This innovative model is groundbreaking, significantly lowering investment needs. There is no need for land acquisition or grid connectivity, and the possibility of a grid-free future emerges. The extensive network of power lines and poles could become obsolete, eliminating transmission losses and allowing for repurposing of switching stations.
Crucially, individuals and businesses transition from being mere energy consumers to producers, reversing the capitalist paradigm. Over time, this could make energy effectively free to users. As operational reliance on this self-generated energy increases, overall reproduction costs decrease, leading to a scenario where energy behaves like digital products—nearly unlimited and virtually costless.

In 2021, Wagner SprayTech in Plymouth, MN, unveiled Minnesota's largest rooftop solar array to date. As the former VP of Sales for Sundial Energy, I had the privilege of facilitating this installation. The facility derives most of its energy from this array, aiming for complete energy independence through efficiency improvements. Although they remain connected to the grid for now, they can credit excess summer production against winter usage. Once battery technology advances, Wagner could achieve complete energy autonomy.

While we aren't yet where we need to be for substantial systemic transformation, companies like Wagner are paving the way. Their achievements in Minnesota showcase the potential for broader implementation across the nation. If they can bridge the gap between producers and consumers, others can follow suit. The climate crisis could catalyze a transition towards a new postcapitalist framework, but we must act swiftly to make a meaningful impact.
