A Journey to Haley’s Comet: A Memorable School Experience

Chapter 1: An Unforgettable Lesson
In seventh grade, when I was just 12 years old, our science teacher organized a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). This was part of a year-long project we had undertaken.

Our project involved... potatoes. Yes, you read that correctly—potatoes! Each of us received a potato to chart, mirroring the efforts of astronomers tracking Haley’s Comet.

My potato began to sprout, and yes, I had to document that too. Through this project, we discovered that comets are actually massive, dirty snowballs, without any green sprouts—at least, none that we knew of!

The day of our visit to the ROM was exhilarating. We had the opportunity to "land" our very own space shuttle on Haley’s Comet, experiencing all the sensations of shuddering, rocking, and the sounds of shuttle jets. While many of us faced epic failures—blowing up our shuttles before even reaching the comet—some of us actually managed to land safely. I can't recall if I was one of the lucky ones, but the thrill of the experience left a lasting impression.

My science teacher ignited a passion for lifelong learning within me through such innovative methods. I will always treasure my "spud comet" and the adventure of landing on Haley’s Comet.
