Chapter 1: Embracing New Opportunities

Having resided in Barcelona for a year and a half, my journey began with the French auto-entrepreneur scheme, where I worked with French clients. Eventually, I felt the urge to seek employment opportunities or freelance projects within Spain.

Fluent in Spanish, I cherish the language and am committed to mastering it further. However, finding a job in a foreign country where the language isn't your first can be daunting, especially when coupled with feelings of uncertainty about one's legitimacy. Relocating internationally requires stepping beyond your comfort zone, but certain barriers may still hold you back.

Given that my financial and personal circumstances hinged on securing employment, I pushed past my limits to discover a position that resonated with me.

I ultimately landed a fantastic freelance role as a Community Manager for a Catalan company aligned with my values. What facilitated this transition?

• Language Proficiency: A strong grasp of the local language dramatically simplifies the process of securing jobs and engaging with colleagues and clients.
• Perspective Shift: Taking a step back to evaluate the situation can help identify obstacles and opportunities. Ask yourself: Where do I currently stand? What do I need? Why or why not?
• Skill Assessment: Understanding your competencies and determining the tasks you can handle—along with the language in which you can operate—allows you to tailor your job search effectively.
• Familiarity with Local Job Market: Recognizing how job searches function in your new environment—utilizing platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and personal networks—is crucial. Set up profiles on popular sites and keep your networks up-to-date.
• Localized Portfolio: Future employers appreciate tangible evidence of your work. Create an Instagram account, a portfolio website, or compile content samples that showcase your skills and receive endorsements from previous employers or colleagues.
• Persistence and Resilience: Finding the right job might take time. Stay motivated and don’t lose hope; your belief in yourself can significantly impact your search.

While it may seem straightforward, the more conviction you have in your journey, the more energized and consistent you will be in your pursuits. Don’t falter; keep pushing forward!
