Navigating Technology as a Boomer: Embracing Change at 72

Understanding Change in a Technological Era
As a 72-year-old baby boomer, I find myself amidst constant advancements in technology. Despite my initial resistance, the rapid evolution of tech has been a part of my life since childhood. I remember the excitement of my father owning one of the first televisions in southern New Jersey, which attracted crowds to our small home for weekend viewings. Those moments, filled with boxing matches and catchy commercials, were the foundation of my fascination with media.
Over the years, I have witnessed dramatic shifts in technology. My journey began with typewriters in school, progressing to the use of computers and basic coding in high school. I still recall our senior trip to the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, where we marveled at a computer that occupied an entire room. As technology became more accessible, I adapted by learning various software programs throughout my career in healthcare during the 90s.
The continuous advancements in devices—from bulky televisions and VHS tapes to today’s streaming capabilities—have fostered resilience in me. I've learned to expect change, and while it can be overwhelming, I've grown to appreciate its benefits.
Adaptation During Challenging Times
Throughout the pandemic, I discovered the advantages of technology. As a psychotherapist, I transitioned to online sessions seamlessly, avoiding health risks while maintaining client relationships. This also allowed me to connect with family, including our granddaughter in Ireland, by setting up video calls at the dinner table.
My friend Karin, separated by distance from her granddaughter in California, has cultivated a strong bond through regular online playdates. Their relationship has flourished thanks to technology, something that would have been much more challenging otherwise.
However, my mother struggled with technology during her time in a nursing facility. While her neighbor thrived with a laptop, my mother found herself frustrated by her inability to adapt, even with a Kindle I gifted her. Witnessing her challenges highlighted the importance of staying connected through technology as I age.
Embracing New Skills
Currently, I am exploring new avenues like podcasting and video creation, although I acknowledge my skills are still developing. It’s a slow process, but I’m determined to keep learning. I understand that staying up-to-date with technology is crucial, especially if I find myself in a nursing home in the future.
Despite my enthusiasm for learning, I also set boundaries to avoid excessive screen time. I reserve the first few hours of the morning and late afternoons for offline activities—whether it's playing games with my husband, cooking, or gardening. This balance ensures I don’t feel overwhelmed by the rapid pace of technological advancements.
Finding Balance in a Fast-Paced World
I often allow myself a bit of a delay in adapting to new tech trends, which provides a buffer against feeling overwhelmed. My approach to technology involves gradual learning; I focus on mastering the basics before diving into the latest gadgets. While I may not own an Alexa device, I occasionally use Siri on my phone, mindful of maintaining boundaries between generations.

In conclusion, my journey with technology continues as I embrace change while cherishing the connections it fosters.
