How to Craft a Nourishing Bone Broth for Youthful Vitality and Wellness

The Bone Broth Phenomenon

With the recent surge in popularity, bone broth has been touted in various media as a miraculous solution. It promises to diminish wrinkles, enhance hair vitality, promote weight loss, and potentially alleviate various life challenges. While the claims might be exaggerated, I have found that incorporating bone broth into my mornings is both delicious and nutritious.

During the colder months, it's an ideal warm drink to enjoy, and making it at home can save you a significant amount of money—some places charge up to $15 for a single cup!

After trying several techniques over the past few months, I've discovered that preparing a large batch of basic broth and keeping fresh ingredients like lemon and ginger on hand allows me to customize my drink based on my daily cravings.

Bone Broth Recipe

This recipe yields about six servings, and you can reuse the bones to make additional broth. I prefer using an Instant Pot, but you can also simmer it on the stove if you wish.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of bones (chicken or beef)
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • A selection of fresh herbs (I typically use thyme, but feel free to choose according to your preference)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 10+ whole black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 8 cups of water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F and place the bones on a baking sheet. Roast for 12–15 minutes.
  2. Transfer the bones to your Instant Pot, filling it about halfway. Add the chopped vegetables, herbs, apple cider vinegar, peppercorns, and salt.
  3. Pour water into the pot until it's just below the maximum fill line (about an inch under).
  4. Secure the lid of the Instant Pot, ensuring the knob is set to "sealed." Cook on high pressure for 120 minutes.
  5. Once the cooking time is up, allow the steam to release naturally, which should take about 5–10 minutes.
  6. Strain the broth through a fine mesh sieve into storage containers. If the bones are still intact, you can repeat the process for more broth.
  7. Let the broth cool for around 25 minutes (do not refrigerate while still hot). After cooling, you should see a layer of fat on top; remove this before storing.

Now you have a flavorful broth to enjoy at your convenience! I love having it in the mornings or as a snack throughout the day. Adding a slice of ginger or a squeeze of lemon juice enhances the flavor and adds extra health benefits.
