From Novice to Virtuoso: My Journey in Online Teaching
Written on
Chapter 1: The Shift to Online Teaching
Before 2020, my online presence was largely limited to Instagram and occasional LinkedIn browsing—just a way to pass the time while waiting for transportation. However, the onset of the pandemic led to a transformative experience with Zoom, which, despite its initially overwhelming nature, revolutionized my professional path.
Section 1.1: Embracing Hospitality and Connection
I consider myself fortunate to have spent a decade surrounded by exceptional colleagues and students in my academic career. This environment has been instrumental in my growth. Additionally, my background in the hospitality industry has been invaluable. Working in customer service taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of engaging with diverse individuals. These skills proved essential when transitioning to online teaching, where maintaining a welcoming atmosphere is key.
Section 1.2: Thriving in the Virtual Classroom
Although I felt apprehensive about moving online, I soon realized that I could not only adapt but also flourish. Initially, I had just two online learners each week, but as time passed, that number grew to eight. When the world began to reopen, I was faced with pressure from some parents to return to in-person lessons. I stood firm, knowing the potential of online teaching, which ultimately led me to expand my client base significantly.
Chapter 2: The Value of Confidence
The first video provides insights into effective online teaching strategies that extend beyond traditional platforms like Zoom.
I now serve around 30 regular clients, ranging from doctors and university students to professional athletes. The fees I charge vary, with additional costs for face-to-face sessions.
Section 2.1: Reframing My Role
I refer to my students as clients because my role extends beyond mere teaching. Instead, I consider myself a Communication Skills Mentor. This title not only serves marketing purposes but also accurately reflects my approach. Whether it's assisting a plastic surgeon in Brazil with a presentation or helping a footballer improve team communication, I am dedicated to their success.
The second video focuses on how to ease into online learning, making remote teaching more manageable and effective.
Section 2.2: Creating a Safe Learning Environment
A traditional teaching approach doesn’t suffice for my clients. I aim to be essential in their learning journeys, creating a nurturing atmosphere where they feel comfortable and supported. Learning a new language can be intimidating, so building trust and understanding is crucial.
Chapter 3: Essential Tools for Online Teaching
To excel as an online educator, mastering specific tools is critical:
- Zoom: A vital platform for virtual classes.
- Nearpod: An interactive tool that enhances lesson engagement through quizzes and videos.
- Gimkit: A fun, interactive platform that captivates younger learners.
- Wordwall: A customizable game space for interactive learning.
- Engoo: Offers excellent reading materials paired with comprehension questions.
- PowerPoint: Essential for helping clients prepare presentations.
Section 3.1: Finding the Right Integration
During seminars in Istanbul, I learned from peers about the challenges of incorporating these tools into lessons. My advice is to select tools based on your clients' needs and class size rather than trying to use them all simultaneously. Through experimentation, you’ll discover what works best for your teaching style and your clients.
In future pieces, I plan to share details about my earnings from online teaching and recommend platforms for generating additional income or even a full-time living.
