The cheerful voice on the radio claims she doesn’t feel past fifty. Her companions inquire if her joints ache.

“Not at all,” she responds.

I pause from peeling potatoes and conduct a quick self-assessment.

Are my knees twinging at 56?

Not really. However, my left hip does throb when I twist, and I wake up stiff as a board.

“Do you feel any discomfort?” I ask my older partner, Lee.

“Only all the time,” he replies.

When did the stiffness and discomfort of aging begin? I often hear friends and relatives voice their physical complaints about getting older. While I keep my own issues to myself, they certainly exist.

I recall a fascinating study where elderly individuals resided in an environment mimicking their youth, engaging in activities and listening to music from their past. Remarkably, many reported a reduction in aches and pains, with improved mobility and overall well-being.

Could our ailments sometimes be a reflection of our beliefs about aging?

I place the potatoes on the stove, attach my dog's leash, and head out for an invigorating walk.

I ponder the age when I felt most agile. Fifteen springs to mind.

I envision my 15-year-old self—bright outfits, more makeup, and dyed hair.

The discomfort in my hip fades, and I walk faster than before. With a grin, I bound home, eager to share my newfound insight on easing aches and pains.

“No, he just said it’s expected and I have to deal with it.”

“What now?” I asked. “Is he anticipating it will worsen?”

That conversation was two years ago, and now Lee’s issue is almost resolved.

It turns out deterioration wasn’t inevitable.

When doctors dismiss your discomfort, you might avoid reporting it. Similarly, if you believe relief is unattainable, you won’t seek solutions.

After experiencing two bereavements earlier this year, I lost the motivation to practice my daily qigong exercises. They had once been a crucial part of my routine, but I found myself lacking the enthusiasm for the slow movements that previously energized me.

Recently, I resumed those exercises, and a wave of happiness enveloped me.

It’s reminiscent of being so thirsty that drinking water feels divine; that’s how grateful I was to be active again.

However, I noticed something surprising while bending—my fingertips took longer to reach my toes compared to a few months ago when it was effortless.

“I need some oil,” I told Lee.

“I’ve got some WD40 in the garage,” he replied with a laugh.

This stiffness occurs when you become less active as you age—everything tightens up until you get moving again.

“Are you still walking like you’re 15?” a friend inquired.

“Yes, mostly. Occasionally, I forget. Then I hear myself groan when I rise from a chair and realize it’s me. So, I sit back down and mimic a child’s movements,” I replied.

“Does it help?”

“For now.”

I recognize that walking like I’m 15 may not last forever. One day, I might have to stroll like I’m 60. But that’s preferable to resembling a rusted lawnmower.

Aging is inevitable, and there’s no use in resisting it. Yet, we shouldn’t lose sight of what we can do to enhance our physical and mental health. While some ailments may not be influenced by our mindset, others can respond positively to a youthful outlook. You can’t simply wish arthritis away (as far as I know), but maintaining a positive mindset can certainly add a bounce to your step.
