A Strategic Approach to Earning as a Writer

Chapter 1: The Writer's Journey
Every good story has its share of heroes and villains. Recently, I found myself reminiscing about those nail-biting moments when the antagonist ensnares the protagonist. The villain reveals their intricate scheme while the hero is left helplessly listening.
In this narrative, I will outline my own plan, but rest assured, I won't be thwarted this time.
Section 1.1: The Permissionless Apprentice Model
Historically, freelance writers have had to wait for clients to seek them out, often competing with countless others on platforms such as Fiverr and Upwork. Many writers find themselves earning less than $50 for each piece they complete.
So how can we change this situation?
The solution lies in persuading businesses to invest in our services before they even realize they require assistance. While the term "manipulation" can have negative implications, is it really wrong to influence someone to quit smoking or to help a business boost its profits?
Manipulation is only unethical when driven by malicious intent.
Now, what exactly is my plan for putting this into action?
Let me introduce the permissionless apprentice model. Here’s the approach I intend to follow:
I’ve compiled a list of influencers, businesses, and products I engage with regularly—things I am genuinely passionate about and knowledgeable in. My unique perspective as a consumer adds value to this process.
For instance, I would draft a script for a YouTube video, create a sales script for a landing page, or produce SEO-optimized content for their website.
After crafting this material, I would reach out to these individuals, expressing my admiration for their work and my desire to collaborate.
When you offer something valuable and compliment others sincerely, they often feel a sense of obligation. Our brains are wired to respond positively to such gestures.
Once I provide them with high-quality content tailored to their style, they are likely to develop trust and appreciation for me. Furthermore, this complimentary piece would likely increase their views or sales.
At this juncture, it would be unreasonable for them to decline my offer. I would have already generated more revenue for them than what I would request in return. My writing style, rooted in genuine interest, is something few others can replicate.
To summarize, here's how to persuade businesses to pay you for your writing:
- Familiarize yourself with sales and copywriting—I'll share some recommended books later.
- Compile a list of businesses, influencers, or products that you admire.
- Create a high-quality piece of content that merges your voice with theirs.
- Send this content to the decision-maker alongside a thoughtful message (this becomes easier with some sales knowledge).
- Collaborate with them to identify their needs and demonstrate how your writing can fulfill those gaps.
I hope you find this information valuable. Have a wonderful week ahead!
