Surround Yourself Wisely: The Three Essential Types of People
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Your Circle
The individuals you choose to surround yourself with can greatly influence your life trajectory.
“You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
— Jim Rohn
This well-known saying holds true for a reason. Rooted in thousands of years of social evolution, the people in our lives shape our identities, values, and perspectives. While supportive friends can elevate you, negative influences can drag you down. A single toxic individual can spoil a positive environment.
From experiences ranging between being around discouraging bullies to fostering friendships with uplifting individuals, I've witnessed the vast spectrum of influence that people hold. The ideal companions can be classified into three primary categories.
Chapter 1.1: The Most Crucial Type
Nothing motivates you more than being in the presence of someone who excels. Although we often say, "Don’t compare yourself to others!" our instincts, honed for survival, naturally lead us to compare.
Instead of letting envy take over, use that comparison as a source of inspiration. Even if a high achiever appears dismissive, stay open and humble.
Section 1.1.1: How to Connect with High Achievers
Whether it’s the fitness enthusiast at your gym or the business mogul driving a luxurious car, approach them directly. When you express genuine admiration and a desire to learn, many will be willing to share their insights, from quick advice to potential mentorship opportunities.
In today's digital age, reaching out through emails or social media can also be effective. Engage with their content to grab their attention. Even from a distance, following their journeys can be motivating.
Andrew Tate, Hamza, Aanghel, and Dr. Jordan Peterson serve as silent mentors in my life, influencing me despite no direct interaction.
Chapter 1.2: The Type That Stays with You
Individuals at the top of their game often seek out peers who match or exceed their level. This is where finding like-minded individuals becomes important. By encouraging one another, you can achieve greater growth compared to going solo.
A training partner from my Muay Thai sessions exemplifies this. We motivate each other to maintain our good habits and fitness routines, and our conversations are filled with rich, high-quality ideas.
However, beware of those who turn every interaction into a ruthless competition. While the drive to improve is essential, it should come from a place of mutual support, rather than negativity.
Section 1.2.1: How to Find Like-Minded Individuals
Be open to meeting new people; even if you don’t start the conversation, be receptive to others. The principle of “like attracts like” will help you encounter such individuals.
Avoid isolation—put yourself out into social settings. Once you form a bond with someone, you can meet their friends, who may share similar ambitions. The more connections you create, the broader your supportive circle will become.
Chapter 1.3: The Overlooked Type
Caught in the hustle mentality, many forget the value of giving back. If you’re positioned on the 9th rung of the ladder, surrounding yourself with those at your level will inspire you. However, don't forget the importance of helping those below you rise as well.
While you should assist those who are eager to improve, avoid those who are resistant to growth. Efforts to uplift those who wish to remain stagnant will only lead to frustration for both parties.
Section 1.3.1: How to Attract Those in Need of Guidance
This is perhaps the simplest aspect—let them find you. When you reach a certain level, those who aspire to improve will naturally gravitate toward you.
When they approach, don’t dismiss them. Offer brief guidance and direct them to valuable resources. Consider how it would feel if someone you looked up to ignored you.
Chapter 2: Conclusion
Three key traits define the individuals worth surrounding yourself with: positivity, a genuine desire for your success, and a drive for self-improvement.
Positivity is the cornerstone that fosters kindness, integrity, enthusiasm, and gratitude. It’s essential to attract individuals who uplift you, rather than those who drain your energy.
To draw these positive influences into your life, become a beacon of positivity yourself.
