The Transformative Power of Saying Yes: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: Embracing Opportunities

The word "yes" holds immense potential when leveraged effectively.

My journey as a Merchant Mariner began at the SIU school in Piney Point, Maryland, a picturesque location at the confluence of the St. Mary and Potomac Rivers. This institution serves as a foundation for the unsung heroes of American international commerce: the unlicensed sailors. While officers may receive the accolades, it is we who perform the essential tasks—keeping the ships operational, providing sustenance, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

This narrative unfolds during my second visit to Piney Point. My initial trip was dedicated to obtaining the necessary credentials to become a Merchant Mariner, while my return was focused on achieving my chief cook certification.

I was part of a diverse group of approximately 30 students in the Chief Cook class, each bringing a unique set of skills. My prior experience as a Steward—the highest position in a ship's galley—prepared me for this next step. I assumed this role because previous Stewards vacated the position due to its perceived low pay. I confidently assured the Captain of my capabilities, and he entrusted me with the role. Despite the pay being labeled “low,” I earned a remarkable $82,000 that year while preparing meals for a crew of 15.

To mentally gear up for my time at Piney Point, I adopted the mantra, "Just say yes." I believed that if I agreed to requests, I would eventually encounter opportunities beneficial to me.

Yes #1

In the first week of classes, the director approached me for assistance in crafting a menu for the school’s training vessel. I was flattered and readily agreed. However, a few days later, he informed me that another instructor would take on the task and thanked me for my willingness. Though disappointed not to showcase my skills, I graciously accepted his decision.

Yes #2

About a week later, during an off-site catering event that all instructors attended, the head chef asked me to help close the galley for the day. Initially frustrated that other students were chosen for the event, I still said yes, honored by the trust placed in me.

The Life-Altering Yes

Five weeks into the 12-week program, an instructor informed me that the port agent was looking for a steward for a Cable Ship and recommended me. This instructor, experienced with the complexities of the role, believed I was the only suitable candidate among the students.

Imagine managing a crew of 70, preparing four meals a day, and operating 24/7, with port visits sometimes stretching to three to four months apart. The logistics of such an operation resemble running a hotel or restaurant at full capacity with only one delivery every three months. It was an incredible honor to be considered for this position.

A few days later, the port agent reached out and asked if I was interested in the role. I responded with a confident yes.

During week six of the program, I was allowed to take all the exams for each unit, which I passed with ease (being a CIA graduate helped!). Shortly after, I returned home to pack and flew back to Maryland a week later to join the ship in Baltimore.

In my first month aboard the Global Sentinel, I earned $18,000, and in my highest-paying month, I made $22,000!

These three affirmative responses were pivotal in transforming my life. I spent the next three years sailing on the Global Sentinel, navigating the challenges of COVID-19 while in a quarantine situation that I hope to recount in a future story.

This experience marked my first encounter with truly life-changing earnings. Had I declined those seemingly mundane tasks at school, I would never have seized these opportunities.

So, the next time you're faced with a yes or no question, consider the implications of your answer. Once you say “no,” the requests may cease.
