Transforming Guilt: A Guide to Releasing Negative Feelings

Written on

Chapter 1 Understanding Guilt

As a female entrepreneur, grappling with guilt often feels inherent. There’s this persistent thought that I must constantly do more. While I recognize this mindset is unsustainable, a part of me clings to it. Do you find this familiar? This journaling practice might be beneficial for you.

Start by writing, β€œI feel guilty because...” Then, compile a list of guilt-inducing statements without self-criticism. Ensure you leave three lines between each entry.

For example:

I feel guilty because I believe I should accomplish more.

Beneath each statement, identify the core belief associated with it:

My value is tied to my productivity.

Next, reflect on the rewards you gain from maintaining this belief:

It gives me a sense of control; if I perceive myself as unworthy, I can remedy it through productivity.

Using a different colored pen, note the toll this belief takes on you:

It leads to burnout, procrastination, and a deeper sense of unworthiness.

On a fresh sheet, rephrase each statement by emphasizing the belief you held, its benefits, the costs incurred, and how you envision this belief transforming:

I used to think my worth was linked to my output, which resulted in immense pressure and burnout, ultimately leaving me feeling less valued. I need to redefine how I perceive my worth and control; I am inherently valuable, independent of my actions.

Additionally, consider using these new affirmations as daily reminders whenever guilt arises.
