Avoiding Romantic Relationship Pitfalls
Romantic relationships should ideally be built on mutual love and respect between two mature individuals capable of forgiveness. It's disheartening to see how some people assert that love is nothing but a scam.
I was raised in an environment filled with affection, surrounded by cultured individuals who valued discipline. In my community, romantic relationships were primarily among committed adults who demonstrated the beauty of love. While a few negative influences—such as cheating and dishonesty—existed, they were certainly in the minority. Marriage and commitment were portrayed as noble pursuits, and conflicts were typically resolved amicably. However, as time passed, our once-loving community descended into chaos, plagued by issues like cultism that spread rapidly, tainting the essence of romance.
The rise of teenage pregnancies, once a rare occurrence, became alarmingly common as young girls fell prey to empty promises of love. Tragically, many young men denied their responsibilities, abandoning the very women they once professed to love, especially when faced with the prospect of starting a family. Some of those men who did take responsibility resorted to physical abuse against their partners. What was meant to be a beautiful expression of love devolved into a harsh reality, with many women struggling to survive and some tragically losing their lives due to unsafe abortions. This heartache could have been averted with a commitment to healthy relationships, entered into with preparation and care.
The teachings in the Bible remind us that there is a time for everything—planting and harvesting, birth and death. Young people must not rush into romantic entanglements; instead, they should invest time in self-preparation and partner selection. While divorce rates continue to rise and some view leaving toxic relationships as a viable solution, the best approach remains ensuring that the foundation is solid from the outset. Negative experiences from toxic relationships can linger for a lifetime, impacting future connections.
We have a responsibility to instill positive values in the younger generation through our actions, as we may not realize who looks up to us. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we serve as role models to someone.
