Navigating Job Titles: A Journey of Professional Identity

Chapter 1: Understanding Job Titles in UX Design

In the world of design and technology, determining the right job title can often feel like a never-ending quest. As Ilana from Broad City humorously notes, “Nobody really gets it.” This sentiment resonates with many as they navigate the complexities of titles within the tech, product, and UX sectors.

When I embarked on my journey in the early 2000s, the term “User Experience” was just emerging as a significant label. It gradually replaced older titles like “Interactive Designer” and “Experience Designer.” During that time, “Graphic Designer” remained a prevalent title, and my own foray into UX stemmed from studying graphic design, where UX concepts were beginning to integrate into curricula. While “Information Architect” was a common designation, the term “Content Strategist” was still non-existent, which might have aligned with my background in content.

As the years progressed, the introduction of concepts like the “Lean Startup” reshaped the landscape. The term UX has become a broad term that may or may not encompass various specialties, depending on whom you ask. This includes:

  • User Experience
  • Human-centered Design
  • UX Design
  • UX Strategy
  • UX/UI Design
  • UX Research
  • Product Design
  • Product Strategy
  • Product Management
  • Interaction Design
  • Service Design
  • Information Architecture
  • Content Strategy

Each of these titles and specialties holds its own value. The proliferation of these titles—like UX Engineer and UX Writer—reflects the growing recognition of UX and product design within larger organizations. These companies require a multitude of specialized roles to maintain an effective UX and design process.

If you're grappling with what title to present yourself as, know that you're not alone in this dilemma. I'm currently contemplating whether to label myself as a Product Strategist or perhaps even as a Digital Design Strategist.

Ultimately, it’s essential to embrace the idea that titles like Experience Designer or Principal Product Roadmap Warrior are equally valid as UX or Product Designer. In our rapidly evolving professional landscape, roles are continuously redefined. Rather than resist this change, lean into it. Feel free to adapt your title as you see fit, and remember that you have the autonomy to shape your professional identity based on your skills and processes, rather than conforming strictly to job descriptions. Your employer has the choice to recognize the value you bring, and this dynamic can be quite exhilarating.

Good luck on your journey! Are you curious about the daily practices I employ to stay relevant as a designer and strategist?
