Discovering the Key Ingredients to Genuine Happiness

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Happiness

I posed a question to numerous individuals, and now I'm extending it to you. To achieve true happiness, we must first identify what genuinely brings us joy.

We humans often find ourselves preoccupied with negative emotions such as sadness, anger, and worry, reflecting on past events and future uncertainties. While this is a natural inclination, research suggests that redirecting our focus to the sources of our happiness could be far more beneficial. Although this shift may seem challenging, it is essential since the alternative often leads to a cycle of negativity.

The first step toward a happier life is discovering what genuinely brings you joy. To that end, I gathered insights from a variety of people. I encourage you to join in, or at the very least, take away some inspiration to elevate your own spirits.

Before diving deeper, let's clarify: What exactly is happiness?

According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, a psychology professor and author of The How of Happiness, happiness is defined as "the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile." While this definition is informative, it feels a bit lengthy. Aristotle offered a more concise perspective: "Happiness is a state of activity."

This raises questions: Is happiness akin to running, dancing, or engaging in creative projects? Science suggests it encompasses any of these activities, but it goes beyond mere actions.

After years of research and exploration into the nature of happiness, I've concluded that it's an elusive emotion, unique to each individual, and often difficult to articulate. Moreover, expecting to be happy all the time is unrealistic given the challenges life presents.

Interestingly, the components that contribute to our happiness evolve over time. For instance, in 1938, Americans prioritized security, knowledge, and religion. Fast forward to 2014, and humor, leisure, and security topped the list. What about today? That’s for you to determine.

Once you identify what constitutes happiness for you, the key is to actively pursue those elements rather than chasing happiness itself, which is often a fruitless endeavor. Instead, focus on specific experiences and actions that you can control, which generally enhance mood, physical health, and mental well-being. This can include nurturing good relationships, engaging in fulfilling work, maintaining a healthy diet, and spending ample time in nature. Cherish the small moments of joy that come your way.

Kieran Setiya, PhD, a philosophy professor at MIT, presents a thought-provoking view on happiness. He states, “Being happy is not the same as living well.” Happiness is a transient feeling, while living well involves navigating life's challenges while finding value in our experiences.

To delve deeper into what fosters happiness today, I reached out to people on Mastodon, a social media platform that many are turning to for a more positive experience. I posed a straightforward question: What brings you happiness?

The responses varied widely, but a common theme emerged—simple pleasures: connections with others, delicious food, art, and meaningful activities. Whether you naturally lean towards happiness or not, I hope that one of these insights will resonate with you and encourage a shift towards a more positive mindset. I invite you to share your thoughts on what brings you joy, and remember to make time for those things regularly.

The video titled "What Makes You Happy? | 0-100" explores the various aspects of happiness and what individuals believe to be the key to their joy. This can provide valuable perspectives that might inspire your own journey.

Section 1.1: Insights on Happiness

Here are some reflections from individuals on what brings them happiness:

  • "Laughing with friends… at ourselves." — Philip Doherty
  • "Quality time with my husband, enjoying delicious food prepared with love, or getting lost in a great book by an open window." — Shannon Hilson
  • "Seeing smiles on others' faces after helping them." — Saravanan Devendran
  • "Practicing gratitude keeps my spirits high." — Jennifer Marla Pike
  • "Spending time with my granddaughters and cycling while listening to podcasts." — Darryl Collins
  • "Being in the creative zone while making art." — Chris Raymond
  • "Story-swapping with friends brings me immense joy." — Jake Sheaffer
  • "Recognizing our shared humanity and respecting our differences." — Splants
  • "Watching my kids succeed is my greatest joy." — Easygoing1
  • "Family moments bring happiness, most of the time." — Eingfoan
  • "Riding my bike is pure joy." — Conjecture Is Radical
  • "Savoring good food." — Alex
  • "A sunny day brightens my mood." — Anton Kutselyk

For me personally, I find my happiest moments outdoors—whether biking, running, hiking, or simply enjoying nature. Fortunately, my wife shares this love for the outdoors, and together, we strive to engage in these activities. Of course, we often slip into habits of worry and distraction, but it's essential to remind ourselves of what truly matters.

If you're uncertain about what brings you joy, consider this approach: Reflect on your happiest memories, perhaps dating back to your childhood. What experiences filled you with joy or purpose? Identify those moments and think about how to integrate them into your current life. Share your goals with friends and family, and dedicate time and energy to pursuing them. Aligning your actions with your desires is crucial.

Mahatma Gandhi wisely stated, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
