Embracing Poetry: Celebrating National Poetry Month

Chapter 1: The Significance of National Poetry Month
April marks National Poetry Month in the United States, a time dedicated to honoring the profound impact of poetry on our culture and lives. I first discovered this celebration in 2022, and it inspired me to reflect on my own writing journey. In my previous blog post on Chronicles of a Warrior KQueen, I expressed my gratitude for this opportunity to celebrate creativity.
This month, I attempted to work on a poem but didn't quite finish it. However, I remain hopeful to complete it in the coming month.
National Poetry Month was established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, serving as a reminder of poetry's essential role in society. As Joy Harjo poignantly stated, "Without poetry, we lose our way."
How has poetry touched your life? Are there poets who motivate you? Some of my personal favorites include Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker, Jalaluddin Rumi, and Mohamad Iqbal.
Having nurtured a passion for writing and poetry since childhood, I often wished I had focused more on refining my craft. I gravitate towards free verse, as it grants me the freedom to express myself without constraints.
Interestingly, I find that my struggles with depression have often fueled my creativity. This connection led me to start my personal blog in 2016, after years of hesitating to share my work. While my challenges sometimes hindered my academic and professional aspirations, they also enriched my writing.
The next month will coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month, a time when I’ll explore this theme further.
On my blog, I have shared a few cherished poems and intend to revive my practice of featuring works from my favorite poets. I recently learned about Dr. Refaat Al Areer, a poet tragically taken from us through violence in Gaza, whose piece "If I Must Die" I shared at the Washington DC National Cherry Blossom Kite Festival on March 30, 2024.
During Women's History Month, I often revisit Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise," a powerful anthem of empowerment that resonates deeply with me. I recited this poem prior to a visit to Busboys and Poets at the close of 2023.
Another poignant work is Langston Hughes’ "Let America Be America Again," which remains timely in light of current events. One of my earlier poems, "Invisible," holds a special place in my heart, having been shared at various venues, including Busboys and Poets.
I first performed "Invisible" in 2009, shortly after moving to DC post-graduation. My last recitation took place at Busboys during the final week of 2022, where I invited colleagues who ultimately lacked the support I had hoped for. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: unless you have established trust, it may be wise to keep your personal and professional circles separate in creative endeavors.
I often feel my writing does not measure up to the incredible artists who inspire me. Yet, I believe that having "the courage to be seen," as Dr. Brené Brown emphasizes, is what defines a true poet and writer.
Embracing your uniqueness can elicit mixed reactions from others; some may find inspiration while others may respond with jealousy. Remember, greatness is not a prerequisite for pursuing your passions.
What’s important is the potential for greatness that lies within each of us. We cultivate this potential through perseverance and a commitment to excellence, ultimately creating something meaningful.
My poetry is genuine because it stems from the heart. The creative journey should not be a competition with others but rather a personal exploration.
As I step into my 40s, I recognize the untapped creative potential within me, stifled for too long by societal expectations. It’s never too late to hone existing skills or embrace new ones.
I encourage you to take a moment this month to create something unique or reflect on the works of your favorite poets.
Happy National Poetry Month!
In Solidarity, Peace, Warmth, and Blessings.
