Exciting Night Out in Copenhagen: Science & Cocktails Experience

Chapter 1: A Unique Evening
Now is the ideal time to step out of your routine and embrace new experiences. This week, I treated myself to an event titled Science & Cocktails. As a parent, I rarely have the opportunity to enjoy an evening out without the kids, so when I do, I aim for events that are both educational and entertaining. This way, I can unwind, expand my knowledge, and have a great time simultaneously.
Science & Cocktails consistently features esteemed speakers from the scientific community who present their research and ideas in a way that resonates with a wider audience. This format makes it a favored venue for sharing popular science concepts. The talk this week in Copenhagen, delivered by Brian Klaas, addressed the intriguing question: "Why do we elect the wrong leaders?"
The event was well-organized, and the drinks were exquisite. Brian Klaas's presentation was thought-provoking, filled with compelling examples. Although I wished for more time to connect with others, I hope for another chance in the future.
About the Speaker:
Brian Klaas is a political scientist specializing in democracy, authoritarianism, U.S. politics, Western foreign policy, political violence, and elections. It was heartwarming to learn how his mother's influence sparked his interest in politics. Over the years, Klaas has provided counsel to governments, U.S. political campaigns, international politicians, the EU, NATO, and beyond. He has interviewed over 500 influential figures, including leaders, cult heads, and even war criminals, to explore why power often falls into the hands of the wrong individuals. Additionally, he hosts the podcast "Power Corrupts" and is a talented drummer for the rock band Contention One. I checked them out on YouTube, and they are genuinely impressive!
I would love to share my reflections, and since you’re here, you might be intrigued as well. Here’s a recap of my experience.
Children's Insight
It's always delightful to hear about children's perceptions and their intelligence. Did you know that children can often predict electoral outcomes based solely on politicians’ facial expressions? They don’t require promises or grand visions; they simply gauge the expressions they see. I can't help but wonder when the media will start considering children’s insights instead of relying solely on pollsters—though that may not happen anytime soon. Later, Brian recounted his encounters with a cult leader, illustrating how good people can morph into tyrants upon tasting power.
The Allure of Power
Brian shared two compelling examples regarding the nature of power. He discussed the infamous Stanford prison experiment, highlighting different methods of attracting individuals to law enforcement. I’ll share a humorous yet authentic depiction of police work in a video here. Be sure to communicate clearly about what or who you desire.
How can one identify individuals driven by a thirst for power? One strategy is to observe their actions: if someone seeks power, achieves it, and then goes to great lengths to retain it, there’s a strong chance they may be power-hungry.
“Power should be a burden, not a calling.”
This powerful statement from Brian emphasizes the need for systemic change. We should actively seek out leaders instead of waiting for them to self-appoint. Sadly, those who would make excellent leaders often shy away from leadership roles. Corporations and parliaments ought to implement integrity assessments for their senior officials, as we’ve learned that unsuccessful psychopaths end up in prison while the successful ones often find their way into politics and business.
Understanding Our Choices
For those unfamiliar with me, I am fascinated by evolutionary psychology. This field sheds light on our behaviors while posing significant questions that provoke deeper thought. I particularly enjoyed the segment of Brian's talk that addressed why we tend to favor men as leaders. To comprehend this, one must consider our hunter-gatherer past: in times of danger, who was seen as the protector? It wasn't necessarily the smartest or the most empathetic individual, but rather the physically strong, the 'macho' figure. Although we may not face the same dangers today, our brains still function as if we are still in that context, leading us to elect charismatic and imposing leaders for our protection.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts!
