A Journey Through Overthinking: Finding Freedom in Singing

Chapter 1: Embracing the Challenge of Overthinking
Every Monday at 5 PM, I eagerly anticipate my singing class. These 30 minutes are a highlight of my week, filled with a mix of excitement, motivation, relaxation, and focus. While it may seem contradictory, this blend of emotions is what makes the experience so enriching.
The progress I see in my singing abilities each week invigorates me for the rest of the evening. The supportive environment allows me to laugh and make mistakes, providing a welcome distraction from my other concerns. However, frustration arises when I know what I want to achieve, yet my voice doesn’t cooperate as I hope.
The more I dwell on it, the more challenging it becomes. Tension builds in my muscles, impeding my vocal performance. Ironically, my voice shines brightest when I am relaxed and trust that the sound will emerge as I envision it in my mind. This process requires relinquishing control, which is often easier said than done.
Often, I find myself caught in the trap of trying not to overthink. As you can imagine, this approach is hardly effective.
My teacher offered some valuable advice yesterday while I was attempting to reach a high note: "You have two options. 1. Just let it out without caring about the result; it doesn’t matter if you hit the note or if it sounds good. 2. Be completely confident that you can do it. Embrace that little bit of overconfidence that comes from knowing your capabilities."
These moments remind me that I’m not just there to refine my singing; I’m also learning life lessons. The key takeaway is about trusting my body, staying present, and enjoying the journey.
I chose the first option, and it turned out much better than expected. While it wasn’t perfect, it was a significant improvement. Just two minutes before the class ended, I decided to attempt the entire song one last time, feeling confident it would work—and it did!
Key Message: You can’t think your way out of overthinking. Connect to either a sense of carefree abandon or a resolute belief in your abilities.
