The Key Reason Why Your Content Isn't Being Read

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Content Engagement

After crafting over 100,000 words online, I’ve come to an important conclusion: much of the content out there is missing the mark. Many creators face two common issues: a complete lack of readership and silence even after a post goes viral.

You may achieve high numbers and viral success, but these do not guarantee a committed audience or paying followers. So, what’s the root of this problem?

Most articles I come across on platforms like X and Medium tend to focus on:

  • Quick fixes
  • Tips and tricks
  • Simplistic 8-step guides

This leads to a frustrating realization: out of every ten posts, only one truly resonates, while the rest go unnoticed.

Are you providing solutions but not witnessing results? Investing time without reaping rewards? Here’s the issue:

When I read on X and Medium, I frequently encounter a recurring theme in roughly every other post: the blame is placed squarely on the audience. Statements like “You’re failing,” or “Let me teach you” are common. This approach is unwelcoming and creates a disconnect between you and your readers.

Why is it that, even after achieving viral status, the audience doesn’t return?

The core of this dilemma lies in the fact that content focusing solely on tips positions you as the “expert” and your audience as “novices.” This dynamic fosters a lack of emotional connection, reliability, and engagement.

It’s akin to experiencing a monsoon at an inappropriate time; while you share your insights, the timing is off, resulting in minimal impact.

I’ve faced this challenge myself, often experiencing deafening silence on my Medium pieces. However, I discovered the crucial missing element:

In addition to sharing knowledge, consider how you impact your readers’ emotions.

“Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader — not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.” — E.L. Doctorow

The reality is that it’s not about you—followers, virality, or high reading counts. It’s fundamentally about your audience: how they feel, how they connect, and what resonates with them.

When you prioritize your audience's experience, they reciprocate with loyalty, engagement, and even financial support. They’re more likely to choose to purchase from you, even when alternatives exist. Why? Because they feel a genuine connection through your words, narratives, and empathetic content.

Content that says, “You are wrong” is far less appealing than content that says, “I, too, faced this struggle and found a way forward.”

Which message do you think will resonate more with the audience? Clearly, the latter.

I can vividly recall writers whose content uplifted me and compelled me to return. These creators opened up about their own struggles, their low points, and how they overcame challenges—experiences that mirror those of their readers.

Section 1.1: The Importance of Empathy in Writing

To infuse empathy into your content, consider the following strategies:

  • Share your failures and challenges.
  • Conclude your pieces with a positive outlook.
  • Foster a connection between yourself and your readers. For example, “I admire your open-mindedness.” (Inspired by Cory Allen’s book, A New Brave You)
  • Narrate your personal stories while educating your audience.

Top writers distinguish themselves through the empathy that permeates their content. Remember, you are writing for fellow human beings, who are inherently emotional beings.

By embedding empathy into your work, you can ensure that your content does not fall flat like poorly timed rain. Let empathetic content be the foundation for sustainable growth.

“Empathy is the ability to step outside of your own bubble and into the bubbles of other people.” — C. JoyBell C.
