Unlocking the Power of Strength Training for Runners

Chapter 1: The Shift in Mindset
In the past, I was convinced that simply increasing my running distance would lead to better performance. However, during my first half marathon, I found myself struggling with back and knee discomfort. After looking into the issue, I discovered that my weaker muscles were causing my back and knees to overcompensate.
Initially, I believed I had to choose between strength training and running. I never considered that incorporating strength training could actually enhance my running skills. Yet, I learned that strength training significantly boosts our running capabilities.
Strength training not only fortifies our muscles and joints, decreasing the likelihood of injuries, but it also enhances our coordination and running efficiency. This combination of running and strength training may seem overwhelming, but after starting my running journey again, I committed to four strength training sessions weekly. Soon, I realized that managing three running sessions alongside four strength workouts was not feasible. I found myself debating whether to cut back on strength training, concerned that I might lose muscle gains.
Ultimately, I reached a satisfying balance by opting for two full-body strength workouts instead of dividing them into upper and lower body sessions. I also included a core-focused session to bolster my core stability.

The results? I've experienced a notable reduction in body aches and pains during and after my runs. Additionally, my recovery times have improved significantly. After my most recent half marathon, I felt remarkably better and was able to explore Chicago without feeling exhausted.
