# Thoughtful Communication: What to Consider Before Speaking
Written on
Chapter 1: The Challenge of Communication
Have you ever found yourself in a conversation with someone you deeply respect, who, in their eagerness to help, bombards you with advice? This could be a close friend or even a family member. It can be tough to deal with someone who, despite their good intentions, struggles to provide the support you need at that moment. In the heat of the discussion, we might react emotionally, leading to frustration or, worse, feeling obligated to accept their advice without question.
This situation often reveals a fundamental issue: while emotional support is valuable, it cannot replace expertise or thoughtful communication. It’s crucial to remember that even those who care about us can miss the mark when it comes to providing sound guidance. Thankfully, there are practical strategies we can employ to enhance our communication—both with others and within ourselves.
> “We fail to say the right words, because we choose to say the wrong words! We choose to say the wrong words, because we fail to think about the right words!” — Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
The human mind is a powerful tool, capable of processing a staggering number of thoughts and decisions daily. In just a second or two, we decide whether to speak or remain silent. Reflecting on past conversations, we often realize that silence might have been the wiser choice. But how do we make the right decision in the moment? What else should we consider beyond the choice to speak?
The word “think” is more significant than it appears. Within this five-letter word lies a framework for thoughtful communication—five essential questions to ask yourself before you speak.
Next time you’re about to engage in conversation, take a moment to reflect on the following:
- T — Is what I’m about to say TRUE?
- H — Is what I’m about to say HELPFUL?
- I — Is what I’m about to say INSPIRING?
- N — Is what I’m about to say NECESSARY?
- K — Is what I’m about to say KIND?
The impact of our words is profound. As Socrates famously noted, spoken words hold greater weight than written ones, as the speaker can defend their statements. Therefore, before you speak, consider the truthfulness, helpfulness, inspiration, necessity, and kindness of your words. If any of these criteria are unmet, it may be wiser to remain silent or choose your words more carefully. If all these aspects align positively, then sharing your thoughts may indeed be worthwhile.
