Why Traveling Alone Won't Transform You into a Better Person

Written on

Chapter 1: The Misconception of Travel as a Transformative Experience

Just three days after completing high school at the age of 18, I used my babysitting earnings to purchase a ticket to Europe. Finally, I felt like an adult, ready to embark on my first solo journey, which filled me with excitement. Over two wonderful months, I explored various destinations including what was then Yugoslavia, Italy, and Holland. While my parents had their reservations about my travels, they ultimately accepted my decision because it was Europe.

As the years progressed, I pushed their boundaries further by spending a year in Colombia during the tumultuous time when Pablo Escobar was still alive, and by setting sail on a boat with strangers, eventually reaching Cuba. However, the landscape of travel has evolved significantly since those early days, with many now viewing it as a remedy for everything from narrow-mindedness to depression.

While walking to the grocery store, I often encounter social media influencers adorned in glamorous outfits, seeking the perfect photo opportunity. YouTubers meticulously document their escapades in front of famous landmarks, creating a booming travel industry. The notion that travel can heal and complete individuals has gained traction, leading to a surge in people pursuing self-improvement through their journeys.

Traveling Alone Will NOT Expand Your Perspective

The most prevalent claim I hear is that travel broadens one’s perspective, but is that truly the case? I've observed countless travelers who seem uninterested in engaging with the cultures they visit. Instead, they seek out familiar comforts like Starbucks and express frustration that locals don’t speak fluent English. Often, they make no effort to learn even a few phrases of the local language, viewing their hosts merely as service providers.

I recall a visit to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, where I felt embarrassed as a group of American tourists entered, loudly discussing their disappointments of the day, completely oblivious to the discomfort they caused others who were trying to grasp the significance of the site.

To genuinely expand your perspective while traveling, you must pause your chatter, refrain from capturing every moment for social media, and prioritize listening, observing, and asking questions—skills that many seem to struggle with.

Traveling Alone Will NOT Enhance Your Communication Abilities

Another frequent assertion is that travel improves communication skills. This can be true—if you genuinely attempt to connect with others beyond merely issuing commands. Too often, I've witnessed travelers who, despite their intentions to learn a new language, retreat to their phones when faced with challenges. It’s simply easier to return to the familiarity of their hotel rooms and indulge in entertainment rather than take the risk of engaging with others.

To truly enhance your communication skills, you must embrace vulnerability, navigate frustration without anger, and practice humility. This involves stepping into situations where you are not the expert and may even appear naïve or foolish as you learn.

Traveling Alone Will NOT Provide Deeper Knowledge Than Reading

The travel industry often claims that real-world experiences teach us more than books or films can. I used to subscribe to this belief, but after working on cruise ships for a year, I questioned its validity. Despite visiting multiple ports, I noticed that many passengers—and even crew members—gained little more insight than they could have acquired from reading.

Passengers were typically taken to beaches or shopping districts, only to be ushered back to the ship for their next meal. Many left with the impression that the crew was there to cater to their every whim, a lesson I doubt holds much value.

To truly learn while traveling, you must take the time to observe your surroundings. Approach experiences with sensitivity and an open mind, and listen actively. During my travels in Russia, I discovered that my friendly smiles, often met with disdain, were not received in the manner I expected. After observing locals interacting, I adapted my approach to match theirs—engaging without the expectation of smiles. This change led to more positive interactions, demonstrating that cultural differences in communication are simply that—differences, not judgments.

So, does traveling inherently make you a better individual? The answer is a resounding NO! Simply venturing out into the world won’t lead to personal growth. To transform through travel, you must shift your mindset from entitlement to gratitude, viewing your journeys as privileges granted by your hosts.

Instead of searching for the comforts of familiarity, seek out experiences that challenge you and resist the urge to impose your own standards on different cultures. Remember, travel will not resolve your internal issues; you’ll likely carry them with you and share them with those you meet. Before planning your next adventure, consider leaving your ego behind and cultivate a profound appreciation for the opportunity to step away from your routine, even if only temporarily. Not everyone has that privilege.
