Twisting the Baseline

In my quest to peel away the layers of distractions that obscure our understanding of reality, I find it useful to explore the concept of the vortex as a metaphor for our human existence. This exploration is not merely academic; it seeks to uncover profound truths about our identity and purpose.

What I seek is an existential understanding—an answer that can be revealed through various perspectives, each offering a unique piece of the puzzle. Fields such as physics, biology, and even spirituality serve as lenses through which we examine our existence. Today, we might look to quantum physics, while yesterday it might have been the realms of psychology or astronomy. Each discipline is like a square on a complex Rubik’s cube.

The principles of physics, especially thermodynamics, as highlighted by John Brodix Merryman Jr., provide invaluable insights into our human condition. These scientific laws grant us a sense of certainty that is often elusive when navigating religious or psychological truths. They serve as a solid foundation upon which we can explore the complexities of human nature.

To echo Dostoevsky, “I can see the sun, but even if I cannot see the sun, I know that it exists. And to know that the sun is there—that is living.”

Spirals of Energy

I vividly recall sitting by a frozen lake, bathed in sunlight that struggled to warm the icy landscape. I watched as swirling pillars of snow danced in the air, shimmering with iridescence. This moment revealed a fascinating truth: even in the depths of winter, amidst the silence of howling winds and buried greenery, life pulsates with beauty and energy.

The snow spirals around the lake symbolized a deeper meaning—an affirmation that energy exists even in forms we might overlook. From circulatory systems and magnetic fields to ocean currents and celestial movements, a constant flow underpins all existence. Even the most solid objects vibrate, embodying energy that is always in motion, whether fast or slow.

We, too, are composed of countless atoms, continually rearranging and transforming over time. Our thoughts, beliefs, and social constructs reflect these same spiraling patterns, demonstrating the intricate connections that bind us to the universe.

Fractally Speaking

From the grand Laniakea supercluster to the atomic orbits within molecules, reality is far more dynamic than we often recognize. Everything is in a state of flux—our ambitions, perceptions, and experiences are all part of this constant motion.

Despite the overwhelming nature of this concept, understanding basic physical principles can provide clarity. We are subject to the same forces that drive motion in the universe. Our lives are characterized by expansion and contraction, and if we could fully embrace this ebb and flow, we might approach change with less resistance.

Yet, our perception of reality is often clouded by inherited beliefs and societal expectations. We impose linear constructs on a complex, harmonious whole, seeking permanence in an inherently transient existence. This misalignment leads to disappointment, as we fail to accept that nothing lasts forever.

The Unvoidable Void

Perhaps every small whirlpool mirrors the ripples created by a paddle in a canoe. Purpose is a complex discussion, often muddied by context. However, what remains clear is that life, as we understand it, is a priority of existence.

The vortex exemplifies this beautifully—mass flows in a circular motion toward a central void. Our actions as a species often reflect an attempt to fill this void, whether through our insatiable quest for knowledge or the constant flow of energy we emit into the universe.

This dual process—radiating energy outward while simultaneously concentrating it inward—offers a profound perspective. We may be destined to become remnants of ash, or perhaps we are meant to unify within the ever-organizing reality that we contribute to.

If we view ourselves as vortices of experience within even larger vortices, perhaps we would resist change less and find greater peace in our journey. Ultimately, we are reminded of a timeless truth: change is a beautiful, inevitable, and enlightening constant.
