Unlocking the Potential of Competitors: Your Secret Asset

Written on

Chapter 1: Transforming Competition into Collaboration

Viewing competitors often feels intimidating, even for the most experienced entrepreneurs. We like to believe our offerings are one-of-a-kind, and when we encounter others in the same space, it can trigger feelings of insecurity and resentment.

This sentiment is familiar to me. When I began developing courses for freelancers, I thought I was carving out a unique niche. I conducted some basic research on my competitors and found little to alarm me. However, as I gained traction and promoted my content, I discovered numerous individuals pursuing nearly identical initiatives.

Initially, my reaction was defensive. I convinced myself that my work was superior, that my knowledge set me apart, and that I would excel while others would falter. I was treating success as a zero-sum game—believing that my triumph depended on their failure. This scarcity mindset hindered my potential to make a more meaningful impact.

Once I moved past that mentality, I reached out to these other creators. To my surprise, I encountered kind, intelligent individuals who were striving for the same goals I had. Many have since become trusted collaborators, and one even became a business partner.

The term "competitor" doesn’t resonate with me anymore. I’ve learned that creators, freelancers, and solopreneurs are often generous with their time and knowledge, readily offering advice and support to one another. I now view my competitors more as colleagues and peers. This shift in perspective fundamentally alters my approach and perception of success.

Reevaluating how you see your competitors can help diminish feelings of envy and impostor syndrome. It will also enhance your skills and lead to a more robust business model.

Here are several reasons why viewing competitors as valuable assets is essential:

They Have Insights into Market Dynamics

Every new venture should conduct competitor research when launching a product or service. Analyzing other businesses in your sector can provide valuable insights into your target audience and how to effectively market your offerings. Rather than engaging in secretive tactics to outpace them, consider them experts from whom you can learn. They’ve already navigated challenges similar to yours. Instead of reinventing the wheel, observe how they communicate with their audience and structure their operations, using those insights to carve out your unique market position.

They Relate to Your Journey

Being a solopreneur can be lonely. With only 10% of Americans classified as self-employed, the vast majority cannot fathom the challenges of building a business from the ground up. The solopreneur community is even smaller; these individuals possess entrepreneurial spirit and operate independently—true unicorns.

Finding others who share your experiences can be invaluable. Many friends and family may struggle to understand the nature of your work, and some may dismiss it as a hobby. Building a network of like-minded professionals can alleviate the isolation often felt in solopreneurship, providing accountability and support.

There’s Ample Opportunity for Everyone

I am always on the lookout for talented freelancers to refer clients to. While I have a reliable referral network, many are overwhelmed with work due to their success. Contrary to popular belief, there is plenty of work available. By viewing your competitors as peers, you can expand your professional network and create a community of solopreneurs with whom you can collaborate in the future.

They Can Help You Value Your Work Appropriately

One of the most common questions I receive pertains to pricing freelance services. To understand your worth, it’s crucial to conduct research. Don’t hesitate to inquire about what your colleagues charge. Society often stigmatizes open conversations about compensation, reinforcing inequities where individuals earn less than they deserve. When working independently, it’s essential to recognize and assert your value. Solopreneurs can dismantle these stigmas by discussing pricing openly and supporting one another in achieving fair compensation. If you discover your competitors charge more than you do, don’t be envious—use that information to adjust your rates.

So, how do you connect with these colleagues?

There are numerous ways to find peers who share your target market. Additionally, consider reaching out to those in related fields to broaden your referral network.

Communities and Organizations

Numerous groups foster community among solopreneurs. Look for Facebook groups tailored to specific freelance professions or broader freelancing topics, many of which offer networking opportunities. Professional associations also exist for various types of freelancers, such as graphic designers, photographers, and writers.

Utilizing Online Searches

Conducting an online search for your skill set in conjunction with your target market can yield valuable insights. The businesses that appear first in search results typically have strong visibility and represent your most significant competitors, as they are what potential clients will see.

Leverage Your Existing Network

Engage your current network and ask for referrals. When conversing with someone, always ask, "Who else should I connect with?" and request introductions.

Freelancing Platforms

Websites like Upwork allow you to explore the type of work you want to do. Such platforms provide insight into how others market and price their services.

By letting go of the fear surrounding your competition, you open the door to a network of peers who understand your journey like no one else. Success doesn’t have to come at another’s expense.

Scarcity is an illusion. Community is the true wealth.
