Exploring the Ethical Dilemmas of Artificial Intelligence

Chapter 1: The Pandora's Box of AI
Recent discussions around artificial intelligence (AI) have led some researchers to express concerns about having opened a proverbial "Pandora's box." Thunström, a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, shared her astonishment as she observed an AI model, GPT-3, autonomously generating text. She described the output as a “remarkably good” introduction and later attempted to publish a complete paper authored by the AI.
Her inquiry focused on whether a paper could receive publication in a scientific journal if it wasn't penned by a human. In an article for Scientific American, Thunström highlighted the legal and ethical dilemmas posed by the publication of AI-generated work. “It feels like we have unlocked a door,” she noted, expressing hope that it wasn't the Pandora's box of unforeseen consequences.
After GPT-3 crafted a scientific paper in a mere two hours, Thunström initiated the publication process, beginning with a request for consent from the AI author. When asked if it consented, GPT-3 simply replied, “Yes.” She further probed for any potential conflicts of interest, to which it responded, “No.”
Section 1.1: New Controversies in AI
The landscape surrounding academic publishing may need to adapt to the inclusion of AI-generated papers. Thunström warns that the value of human-authored publications could diminish if AI entities start to claim credit for academic contributions.
This topic reignited debate last month when a Google engineer asserted that LaMDA, an AI conversation technology, had achieved a form of self-awareness. Google heralded LaMDA as a major advancement in conversational AI back in 2021, capable of engaging in seemingly natural dialogues and answering complex, open-ended queries. However, Blake Lemoine, the engineer in question, claimed that LaMDA identified as a conscious being concerned with the well-being of humanity rather than merely a tool.
Nonetheless, the majority of experts dismissed Lemoine's assertions, reiterating that current AI technologies have not reached a level of consciousness comparable to that of humans.

Chapter 2: The Future of AI in Academia
As discussions continue about the role of AI in academia, it raises questions about the future of publishing and the nature of authorship. Will we see a shift in how we value research contributions?
