Chapter 1: A Drift into Fear

As I stood on the deck of a ship gently gliding toward the harbour, the weight of childhood anxieties swirled within me beside a former friend. I stared at the distant horizon, attempting to evade the deep-seated dread that threatened to surface. The soft thud against the dock marked our arrival, causing my legs to tremble as if the ground had vanished beneath me. My friend glanced at me, a flicker of concealed relief in his eyes. In a hushed tone, he asked, "He saw you... he noticed your anxiety. What should we do now?"

For the first time, I turned to look at the harbour, hoping to find solace in the bustling crowd. There he was, unmistakable — tall, with a scarred face and eyes as dark as abyssal pits. His presence felt less like a figment of my imagination and more like an oppressive reality from which there was no escape. He had come for me, and I felt a chilling certainty of my existence. With a strained voice, I urged my friend, "You should go… take these items with you. No one will hinder you."

I redirected my attention, losing myself in the intricate lines and vibrant hues of my sketches, trying to drown out the gnawing fears consuming my thoughts. Gradually, the sounds around me faded as if the very air had been siphoned away, leaving the world dim and the scent of iodine dissipated. Would he be behind me, or had he missed me and moved on?

After what felt like an eternity, I heard footsteps drawing near. I noticed the ship was now devoid of passengers, replaced by a group of uniformed men, led by one with a gun strapped to his side. He approached me and in a commanding tone asked, "What are you doing here?"

With a steady hand, I raised my drawing, a calm smile emerging despite the inner turmoil. He scrutinized my artwork, then returned a smile, revealing broken yellowed teeth. He turned to lead me toward the harbour, and I followed, only to encounter several armed officers, as if they had been awaiting my arrival. Yet, I felt the dread begin to dissipate—perhaps because the man with the dark eyes was absent from their ranks.
