Transforming Fitness Into an Automatic Part of My Life

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing New Challenges

Starting something new often demands significant time and concentration to achieve a certain level of skill.

For instance, I recall the first time I attempted to play the guitar as a child. I was completely lost. The only thing I was confident about was how to hold the instrument, having seen others do it before. However, beyond that, I was clueless. Pressing the strings hurt my fingers, and strumming them seemed nearly impossible, leading me to question how anyone could create music from this odd contraption. Despite the struggles, I persisted.

Fast forward a few years, I found myself performing in front of an audience of over 200 people and even auditioned for a guitar performance scholarship at Berklee College of Music. (Though I didn't secure the scholarship, the experience was invaluable.)

The fascinating part? I took a break from playing for about 7 to 8 years, but when I picked up the guitar again, it felt as if I had never stopped. All the skills I had developed over the years were still there, ready for me to access. My brain didn't need to consciously think about what to do; my hands instinctively remembered how to produce music.

This experience parallels the journey of fitness. You can transition from thinking, "I really should start going to the gym," to effortlessly lifting weights as part of your daily routine. The shift from "I can never stick to a diet" to having control over your body weight is achievable. You can move from avoiding your reflection to proudly admiring your progress with a satisfied smile.

Initially, making these changes will be challenging. However, if you commit to showing up even on days when you don't feel like it, over time, fitness can seamlessly become a part of your lifestyle through consistent actions each day and week. That's how I achieved it, and I believe you can too.
